Community Gardens Project
Volunteers Needed
The Franklin Township Environmental Commission has formulated plans to construct the first Township sponsored Community Garden. It will be located in Naaman Williams Park near Fuller Street and will be ready for the start of the 2010 growing season.
This garden is intended to serve residents of the Parkside Development and the Leewood Housing Project to be built off of Route 27 between Pine Street and Irving Avenue. The Leewood project will share a boundry with Williams Park and construction should start in 2010.
The Williams Park garden will be constructed using funds obtained through the 2009 Community Development Block Grant program with support of and help from the Township Council, Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments and local residents.
The garden will be 60 feet by 100 feet and will contain more than 30 individual plots measuring 6 feet by 18 feet. Water will be available for plot users. Users will have key access to the garden and off street parking will be available.
Volunteers will be needed to help with fence installation and other duties during one weekend in March. Date and time announcements will be forthcoming on this web page.
It is hoped that the Naaman Williams garden will be the first of many to be built in the years ahead throughout the Township on park and school property locations and on Township owned Open Space land.
In keeping with current “Green” farming methods, the goal is to have garden users employ environmentally sensitive growing and recycling methods to include limited use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals. A composting area will be located next to the garden. Ground-up leaf mulch will be available for soil enrichment.
