FLAG DISPOSAL BIN AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, New Jersey—December 15, 2009—Members of the public are invited to dispose of their worn out and torn flags in a disposal bin in the Franklin Township Municipal Building, 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset.
The bin was donated by American Legion Post No. 478, with the printing and painting of the bin donated by Franklin Sign and Stamp.
Ray Werensly, Commander, and Joe Scalzone, 2nd Vice Commander of the Post, said there is a ceremony held on Flag Day, June 14, when the flags are properly burned in the flag retirement structure on the Municipal Complex. This is the only structure in the area specifically built for this unique purpose.
Burning of worn flags is the preferred method of disposal according to US Flag Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8(k) which states “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a signified way, preferably by burning.”
Last year, the Post was collecting flags in other locations, and burned over 200 flags with the assistance of Boy Scout Troop 154 from Somerset.
