ALL animal bites (including dogs, cats, raccoons, bats, etc) must be reported immediately to the Health Department. Biting dogs are quarantined and only released with a veterinarian's report.

  • An Animal Control Officer is on 24 hour call to answer animal emergencies. The Animal Control Officer can be reached by calling the Police Dispatcher at 873-2300.

  • The Animal Pound is located behind the Municipal Building on DeMott Lane. Stray animals are brought to the pound and held for seven days. Anyone wishing to adopt an animal or assist in the adoption of these animals should contact the Animal Pound at (732) 873-2500 Ext. 255.

  • Free walk-in RABIES CLINICS for dogs and cats are offered several times each year.

  • All dogs seven months or older must be licensed - NJ law makes proof of rabies vaccine mandatory before a license can be issued. Dog licenses can be obtained in the Township Clerk's Office at the Municipal Building, 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset. The license fee includes a metal ID tag.
