RECRUITING
Field Training Program
A Field Training Program is a probationary officer's transitional
stage from recruit at a training academy to Police Officer. The
time spent in the FTO program is a new officer's introduction
to the department's policies, procedures, report format and protocols.
The Field Training Program offers a new officer an understanding
of the Franklin Township Police Department's mission and goals
and ensures that every new officer will be dedicated to the service
and protection of the community.
Chief Novick designed the FTO program in 1997 while attending
the FBI academy. The program was initiated in 1998 after formal
and informal research was completed.
-The FTP is modeled after similar programs in Atlanta, Los Angeles
and Minneapolis. We believe we have taken the best of all the
programs and put together a program specifically tailored for
FTPD.
-The program was instituted specifically to mentor, counsel
and guide new officers during their introduction to Franklin
Twp. and police work rather than use the traditional method of
haphazard training and placement. The department believes that
first impressions are lasting and through an exemplary program
of training, new officers will have a positive base to stand
upon.
-The officers assigned to be Field Trainers are chosen after
a review of their productivity, attitude, loyalty and demonstration
of their belief in the philosophy of the department. The FTO's
wear a chevron with a rocker so new officers may easily identify
them as well as offer a symbol of recognition by the department
for their leadership and dedication. The program has several
levels of Training Officer and is considered a stepping stone
into management in the department.
