NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE
TEAM
NPT stands for Neighborhood Police Team. The NPT addresses the
underlying conditions that give rise to crime and repeat calls
for service. The NPT exemplifies the FTPD philosophy of community
policing. Community policing is a proactive approach that incorporates
the assistance of neighborhood residents to solve problems. The
officers of the NPT utilize car, foot and bicycle patrols to
improve the quality of life for residents in a targeted area.
Cooperation between NPT and residents fosters positive police-community
relations. This philosophy enables NPT officers to build a rapport
with residents.
NPT officers usually wear a bicycle uniform, but they may wear
the standard police uniform or plainclothes as determined by
the task they are assigned. They work a flexible schedule so
that they are available to address particular problems, attend
community events and neighborhood meetings. NPT officers attend
many community events such as the annual Martin Luther King Jr.
breakfast and the St. Matthias Carnival. Through attendance of
these events, the NPT unit strengthens the ties between the community
and the police department.
