P.A.C.E.R.
NPT Officers participate in a program at the Pine Grove Manor
School called P.A.C.E.R. PACER stands for Police And Children
Engaged in Reading. The
program was developed by a teacher at Pine Grove Manor School,
Sandy Bialick, in conjunction with the Franklin Township Police
Department.
The PACER program has been recognized with national awards several
times. PACER was instituted to bring the police and students
together in a positive activity - Reading. The NPT officers
go to Pine Grove Manor School every Wednesday and they read
stories to the students from kindergarten through the third
grade. After they read the stories, the students are given
an opportunity to ask the officers questions. PACER allows
the students to get to know the NPT officers on a personal
level and this makes the children comfortable with members
of the police department instead of fearing the police. The
students learn that the police are there to help them.
Since its inception, over a thousand students have benefited
from the PACER program.
