SHADE
TREE COMMISSION MINUTES
July 25th 2002
The meeting was
called to order at 7:35 pm.
Present: Orsini, Baumley, Evans, Galdi, Marshall, Geoghegan, Jaquett
Absent: Gierlich, Hamilton
M. Orsini updated
news. Bruce Hamilton has submitted his resignation from the Commission
due to his need for increased time and involvement with the Meadows
Foundation. M. Orsini has asked Roberta Loos to join, since she indicated
her interest prior to January, but there was no available slot. She
has accepted and will be forwarding her application/resume to the Clerk.
M. Orsini received note from National Tree Trust indicating that the 300 trees
requested were preliminarily approved pending receipt of the second half of
the application due October 1.
Status of trees planted on Arbor Day very similar to last meeting.
On 7/13, Al, Berit and I installed deer fencing at Al's farm to protect the
young trees.
J. Baumley led further discussion of types of trees we should planting and
when. Strongly suggests that trees potted up, such as those at Al's farm, be
planted in late fall i.e. October-November, as they approach dormancy. Otherwise,
a spring planting will require lots of labor and watering since hot dry weather
is sure to follow. The 6-8 ft. branched trees that Jeff can obtain are better
for spring planting and require less maintenance. M. Evans suggested Dunham
Lebed and Inman park as possible locales. Jeff will look at both sites for
suitability. Initial suggestion is to get 10-15 flowering trees and 10 or so
shade trees. Can be used to replace pines lost in fire on Loop Lane (Inman
park) and to shade/landscape areas in Dunham Lebed including the playground
area and the fence line on 15th St. side before baseball field and area between
parking lot and play area on Willow Ave. side. Will put in order soon for delivery
in March, planting in late March/April.
Elm trees-M. Orsini will check this weekend. Al is unavailable this Saturday;
Jeff may be able to help. Will plan to move in 1-2 weeks assuming scale is
gone. M. Orsini will coordinate thereafter.
9/11 memorial-Jeff will tour school areas with Rick Goetz this Tuesday, 7/30.
M. Orsini will distribute "assignments" for coverage of schools.
Environmental guidelines-Jeff will write up list of trees. B. Jaquett pointed
out that from developer's standpoint, list should give as many options as possible.
Also list trees that are unsuitable. If developer wants to plant another variety
will consult with Commission prior to planting. Should have list done by Aug/Sept.
M. Orsini will try to get township personnel to write up a Microsoft Word document
so that the guidelines are easily accessible for printing and distribution.
Core training October 18-20, Cape May: M. Orsini and M. Evans definitely attending.
Galdi/Geoghegan cannot. Jaquett can if emergency. Baumley maybe. We need at
least 2 core-trained individuals but we'd like an "extra" in case
someone leaves Commission, etc. Application will be in next month's edition
of the Shade Tree. Cost generally covered by Township or will cover from our
budget if needed. Hotels/meals/transport on your own-make it a vacation.
The public portion was opened. There being no one from the public in attendance
the public portion was closed.
Meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.
