TREE COMMISSION MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 7:35 pm Present: Orsini,
Galdi, Evans, Marshall, Jaquett, Baumley, Gierlich Everyone conveyed a positive experience with the Dawn Redwood planting on 9/11. Everything went off reasonably smoothly given the hectic schedule of the day and the logistics. M. Orsini handed out copies of the latest postings to the website regarding the jurisdiction of the STC and DPW and work done by public utilities. J. Baumley questioned as to whether the former could lead to a flood of people requesting replacement of street trees. It was agreed that this is possible, however, unless more money is allocated from DPW budget, all requests will have to be prioritized and resources allocated as usual. As the trees at Al's farm mature, some could be used as street trees, although these would more likely come from grants and other sources like the ones on JFK. The inability to handle these requests should not reflect negatively on the STC, as it must be understood that our resources are limited as well. The Lion's club is donating 50-100 trees to be potted up at Al's farm for future plantings on 10/26. Anyone who can help is encouraged to do so, although the Lion's club will provide most if not all labor. Al has prepared the ground and we have sufficient pots so all is ready. Everyone should be set for Cape May Tree Foundation meeting. Mark Evans to CE classes, M. Orsini to receive Core training, B. Jaquett to attend CE classes. Roberta Fleischman has been appointed as Alternate to replace Bruce Hamilton. STC, along with Environmental Commission (EC) to distribute seedlings at Op-Cop, 10/12, 10-3. Ted Chase (EC chair) asked for STC to fund half, approx. 150.00. Everyone agreed to allocate. So far, have B. Jaquett, A. Galdi and J. Gierlich to help staff booth, along with scouts (J. Gierlich). Anyone else able to volunteer any time is welcome. Last year, EC gave out 300+ seedlings and ran out. Will have more this year. Definitely an event we should attend due to exposure for us. National Tree Trust grant is finalized. B. Jaquett will send thru Bonnie von Ohlen. CSIP grant due 11/01; M. Orsini will write, use numbers from last year's grant. Target DeLar, Inman park for trees, using 165.00/tree from Central Jersey Nurseries. Will apply for max 6K grant. Environmental Commission guidelines- S. Geoghegan has typed up into Word document. J. Baumley provided changes pasted in and M. Orsini will finalize final document. The meeting was opened to the public. There being no one in attendance, the public portion was closed. The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm. |
