SHADE
TREE COMMISSION MINUTES
October 24, 2002
The meeting was
called to order at 7:40 pm
Present: Galdi,
Evans, Marshall, Baumley, Fleischman, Geoghegan
Absent: Orsini, Gierlich, Jaquett
2. Discussion
was held regarding the Nov-Dec. meeting and all in attendance agreed
on November 21, 2002 at 7:30 as our Nov-Dec meeting. We will need to
find out if we can use the conference room as we normally do. Mark
Evans gave a brief overview of his training in Cape May and also there
was discussion about the Asian longhorned beetle that has been found
in Jersey City recently. Mark had detailed pictures that have been
passed out to all local municipalities to keep an eye out for these
horrendous insects. Also talked about bacterial leaf scorch (BLS) that
is affecting trees in the state that burns part of the leaves on deciduous
trees eventually killing them...also very informative.
3. Brief discussion about Saturday's planting. I have put some dirt in my dump
truck and put it in the barn to stay dry. This way all the potting can be done
INDOORS, then the pots can be brought outside to be planted. This way not everyone
has to get wet and the planting can still be done. I have two Boy Scouts coming
if needed. They are going to be working on community service badges.
4. Ryck Suydam stopped in regarding the trees from OP-COP. He and I will try
to find homes for these trees at several local schools. Leftovers maybe we
could plant some on Sat at the farm? On another note, Jeff Baumley has received
confirmation on our shade trees for our spring planting and all should go as
planned.
5. As for tree maintenance
this was discussed and the general feeling
was that not much should be needed this year. Jeff Baumley would like to stop
by the farm and check the trees out and he will give his opinion then. In Flemmer
park all the trees have died...sad but true. Jeff will also stop by there to
see if there is a alternate location within that park to replant the trees.
6. Congrats to Shiela, Mike and Jeff for finishing the guidelines were expressed.
Jeff reported that he had received a phone call from a member of the public
unrelated to the Shade Tree Commission regarding a tree planted by a developer.
According to the homeowner the tree is a Mountain Ash, which according to Jeff
does not grow well in our area. He will also check this out.
Also Jeff would like to add a blurb about augering in of trees. Reiterated
how bad this practice is and how it should be in the guidelines.
7. The dinner date is set! December 12, 2002 at Good Time Charlies in Kingston...6:30
PM...all are welcome.
8. All members were polled regarding next years meeting dates and it was unanimously
agreed to keep the same time and place...4th Thursday of each month at 7:30...except
for the Nov.-Dec. meeting the will be on the 3rd Thurs. of November with NO
meeting in December.
The meeting
was opened to the public. There being no one in attendance, the public
portion was closed.
The meeting
was adjourned at 9 pm.
