GENERAL PURPOSE
Under supervision of the Assessor, this position is responsible for inspection and measurement of buildings as well as other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under supervision of the Assessor and/or Deputy Assessor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meet with property owners in a friendly but business-like manner, to arrange measurement and inspection of buildings, to observe farming operations, and collection of property appraisal data, at the same time explaining the functions of the Assessor’s Office.
- Inspect farming operations to determine qualifications under the Farmland Assessment Laws of the State of New Jersey.
- Inspection and re-measuring of homes at time of resale.
- Inspection of homes on an ongoing basis as part of annual reassessment program.
- Must be able to work evenings and Saturdays.
- Perform all other duties, related tasks as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Graduation from a college or university with a four (4) year degree preferred.
Experience:
- Experience in Revaluation work preferred but not required.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Valid state driver’s license required.
- Certified Tax Assessor certificate desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must have a personality that will create a favorable impression of fairness and impartiality on those persons visiting the Assessor’s office or those met while making field inspections.
- Must possess ability to correctly measure buildings, land, and all other real estate commonly subject to assessment by the Assessor’s Office.
- Ability to read and interpret tax maps, surveyor’s maps and instruments of conveyance of property as used in the Assessor’s office.
- Ability to deal effectively with public and personnel calmly, tactfully and courteously.
- Reasoning and verbal ability to comprehend interpret and applies contexts of law, rulings and procedures and to understand instructions of the supervisor.
- Perceptual speed and numbers facility to review records and reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Dependability and attentiveness in preparing, monitoring and reviewing records.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Tablet, tape measure, flashlights and other tools and/or equipment used to evaluate property characteristics for valuation.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to work outdoors, traveling between residential and commercial properties to verify data, take photographs, and assess structural changes.
