National Night Out Recap

Franklin Township celebrated National Night Out in a spectacular fashion.  National Night Out is an annual community event, celebrated on the 1st Tuesday in August, throughout the country, to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood cooperation.  Franklin’s Tuesday night event offered something for everyone to enjoy.

Franklin Township’s municipal services all came together to get in on the fun.  Somerset, Middlebush and East Franklin Fire Companies had trucks and gear on display, along with East Millstone First Aid Squad.  The Department of Public Works also had large construction equipment on display.  And of course, what would be a National Night Out without the police cars.  The newest patrol car and motorcycle were both on display.

The Franklin Township Police Department had officers conducting building tours of the Public Safety Building, while officers from the police department’s Community Relations Bureau were available to answer questions about their many free programs offered throughout the township.  The Traffic Safety Bureau was also present to show proper car seat installations, alongside the Detective Bureau who showed crime investigation techniques.

No successful event would be great without food and entertainment.  Franklin Township’s National Night Out had its share of both.  If you were hungry, you could choose from CTs BBQ, Tacos Los Gueros, Desi Food Galaxy and Josefa's Ice Cream.  You could also find popcorn and icees donated by Point Community Church.  And since it was oh so hot that evening, ReadyRefresh donated water bottles that were in coolers throughout the complex for everyone to enjoy.

If musical entertainment was your vibe, you had the option of country band Due South performing at the gazebo as part of the Gazebo Concert Series, or FTPD Officer Kenneth Reid, deejaying in front of the senior building.  If you were feeling competitive, there were games such as gunny sack races, football toss and the hula hoop toss.

One of the highlights of the event was a guessing game for a chance to win a free Apple Watch, donated by Amazon.  Also, attendees were encouraged to visit a variety of vendors and information tables by completing a 'scorecard'.  All completed 'scorecards' had the chance to win a gift certificate that was donated by Stewart's Root Beer.  Program displays and giveaways were also provided by the Recreation Department who joined in making this a great evening.

This year’s event was the township’s first National Night Out in over 20 years and by all accounts, it was a success!!  Residents can look forward to this becoming an annual event.  So next year please mark the first Tuesday of August on your calendars and join us for police-community fun and entertainment.
