Franklin Township Animal Control – Press Release
Recent Wild Bird Mortality in Nearby Areas (Somerset County & Statewide)
Recent reports from neighboring Somerset County parks note observations of dead wild birds, including at the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge and Duke Island Park in Bridgewater. Officials and park authorities are investigating the situation and are working with state and federal partners to understand the cause(s).
Other reports throughout New Jersey indicate increased sightings of dead or sick wild birds, particularly waterfowl, over the past few days.
While avian influenza (H5N1) continues to be monitored in the region, detection elsewhere does not mean local confirmation.
Officials urge calm and caution, but no public health alert or panic is warranted.
Safety and Reporting Guidance for Residents:
+ Do not handle sick or deceased wild birds. If you encounter them, leave them undisturbed.
+ Keep pets leashed and away from areas where such birds are observed.
+ Residents who have concerns, or who observe sick or dead wildlife, should contact the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection at the reporting number below.
Report to NJ DEP Fish & Wildlife: 1-877-WARN-DEP or use their Wild Bird Disease reporting form.
