Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

Franklin Township (Somerset), NJ — Update: The preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was operating an e-bike at the time of the crash, however, a follow-up investigation by the department’s Traffic Safety Bureau determined that the vehicle was an electric motorcycle.  The two wheeled vehicle in this crash does not meet the statutory definition of a low-speed electric bicycle (e-bike) under N.J.S.A. 39:1-1, as it is not a pedal-assisted bicycle.

Public Safety Director Lloyd N. Fredericks announces that the Franklin Township Police Department is actively investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving an electric motorcycle.

On Saturday August 15th, at approximately 1:28 p.m. officers were dispatched to Route 27 and South Middlebush Road following a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and car.

Upon arrival officers located an adult male suffering from serious injuries.  Emergency medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital responded to the scene and transported the adult male to a local hospital.  This individual was later pronounced deceased.

An investigation indicates that the victim was operating an electric motorcycle south on Route 27 when the collision occurred with a vehicle making a left turn from Route 27 north bound onto South Middlebush Road.

“Our condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this tragic time,” said Director Fredericks. “We urge everyone to slow down, remain alert, and follow the rules of the road.”

The investigation remains ongoing.  Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact Officer Ryan Ellington at 732-873-5533 ext. 3174.
