The Sisters Network of Central Jersey Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Franklin Township

Franklin Township is proud to announce that the Sisters Network of Central Jersey (SNCNJ) , a Somerset-based organization will kick off their seventeenth year of providing support services to women approaching different stages of  breast cancer. This organization also provides sponsorship programs, memorial services, fundraisers, as well as medical and transportation services to individuals combatting breast cancer. This disease has appeared in different ethnic and racial groups exponentially.

SNCNJ has made it their mission to increase local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the African American community. According to the American Cancer society, African American women have the highest death rate among all ethnicities and races. African American women are 42% more likely to die from it than their white counterparts. The reason why the death rate is so high among African American women may be attributed to the lack of education and awareness about this disease.

“Breast cancer impacts the African American women who are underserved. Women who have pressing family issues cannot stop and focus on themselves,” according to Dorothy Reed, Co-Founder and President of the Sister’s Network of Central New Jersey.

SNCNJ is a 501(c) 3 organization that raises money to fight breast cancer through sponsorship and fundraisers. Reed further stated that money raised toward breast cancer treatment goes directly to the individuals that need the resources.

“We help women where they need help. One woman experienced extreme heat from chemo and needed an air conditioner, another woman needed rent payment assistance,” says Reed. “They can’t miss a day of work, life gets in the way, and they die more.”

Dorothy Reed and the co-founder and vice president of SNCNJ, Lareatha Payne, spend most of their time helping members by getting their children ready for school, busing or driving them to school, or by driving members to doctor’s appointments. They also conduct survivor meetings the first of every month to discuss issues of recovery, and health insurance coverage for the medical treatments. Their primary focus is to raise awareness, funds, and public involvement in helping breast cancer victims to combat the disease. They host two major fundraising events during the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in October-the 2017 RunWalk4Life, and the 14th Annual Pearl Grace Golf Tournament.

The 2017 RunWalk4Life will take place on October 7 at Colonial Park, 156 Mettlers Road in Somerset. This event will create a platform for walkers, joggers, volunteers, and vendors to promote the organization’s fundraising efforts.  Volunteers and vendors onsite are encouraged to arrive at 7:00 am.  Registration and check-in will start at 7:45 am for the participants. The 5k race will start at 9:00 am, and the 1 mile walk challenge will start at 9:15 am. Money raised from this event will also support the Breast Cancer Assistance Program (B-CAP), which provides emergency breast cancer related services for qualified women during chemo and radiation treatments.

The 14th Annual Pearl Grace Golf Tournament was named in honor of SNCNJ Co-founder, Pearl Grace, who succumbed to breast cancer.  The tournament will take place on October 9th at Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough, NJ, registration starts at 7:30 am, followed by a continental breakfast, lunch reception, and awards at 2:00 pm.
