The Franklin Township Shade Tree Commission promotes the conservation and stewardship of trees throughout the Township by advising township officials regarding planting, care and maintenance of trees on township-owned lands. The Commission will assist Franklin Township residents by increasing awareness of the benefits of arboriculture and providing advice and information regarding the selection, planting and care of trees.

Franklin Township Receives Sustainable Jersey Silver Certification
(Atlantic City, NJ)- Franklin Township was among 51 New Jersey municipalities to receive recognition for achieving Silver Level Certification at the 2019 Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon on November 19, 2019. The Township previously received the Silver Level for 2016-2019 and is now Silver Level certified for 2020-2022. Franklin Township Councilman Theodore Chase spearheaded the 12 person Green Team, an action key to obtaining the Silver or Bronze Level Certification. Just before receiving the Bronze Level in 2010-2012 and 2013-2015.The Green Team has been in place since 2009.
Franklin's Green Team serves a vital role in developing plans, implementing programs and assisting with educational opportunities about Sustainable Jersey actions focusing on Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations, Open Space Preservation, Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free Public Places, the Farmers Market, NJ Wildlife, to name a few. With the collaborative efforts of the Franklin Township Council and the Green Team, a total of 460 points were achieved in several of these categories. Collectively the Township, 212 municipalities and 241 school districts completed 16,550 Sustainable Actions, earning a total of $5.6 million in grants.
"It is thanks to the great commitment, cooperation, and participation of Franklin Township Manager, Bob Vornlocker and all Township staff that Franklin has again been able to achieve Silver status, with 460 points worth of actions to improve our sustainability and resilience. Particularly important is the Township's purchase of ten electric vehicles for building inspectors and other staff who travel about the Township to do their jobs, thus reducing our carbon dioxide output,” stated Councilman Chase.
Councilman Theodore Chase serves as Council liaison to the Environmental Commission, Open Space Advisory Committee, Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, Agricultural Advisory Committee, and Kingston Village Advisory Committee. Councilman Chase has been a leader of the Township’s Green Team since Sustainable Jersey started in 2009.
