Franklin Township Stigma-Free Council Tackles Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Stigma
In a groundbreaking initiative, Franklin Township, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, invites residents to join in the fight against mental health stigma and substance use disorder (SUD) stigma by becoming part of the Stigma-Free Council. The Stigma-Free Council holds monthly meetings, providing a platform for residents to collaborate on strategies to combat stigma effectively. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Franklin Township Community Senior Center, 505 DeMott Lane, Somerset, NJ.
Stigma refers to a negative social attitude or belief about a particular characteristic or condition. Left unchecked, stigma can lead to prejudice, discrimination, and feelings of shame which ultimately prevent individuals from speaking about their issue or even seeking help.
The Franklin Township Stigma-Free Council recognizes the pervasive stigma attached to mental health issues and substance use disorders, which often prevents individuals from seeking help and support. By creating a council dedicated to eradicating this stigma, the Township is taking a significant step towards building a more compassionate and understanding community. This council hopes to champion public awareness campaigns, educational programs, advocacy efforts, and more, to foster a community that supports individuals struggling with mental health challenges and substance use disorders.
